SUNUM HAKKINDA

Wojciech Bobowski (1610?-1675?) is one of the most remarkable figures in the history of cultural contacts between Central Europe and the Ottoman Empire. In Turkey, he is best known by the name Ali Ufkî (Ufukî) ‒ as a composer, poet and author of the first “anthology” of Ottoman Turkish music recorded in European musical notation. In Europe, he is better known as Albertus Bobovius or Ali Beg – a translator of the Bible and other religious texts into Turkish and an author of several works on Islam, Turkish customs, and Turkish language.

Bobowski’s role as an intermediary between the East and the West is well documented and known in the international academia. However, my current research shows that Western European, Turkish and Polish lore on Bobowski’s life story differs significantly. His biography is still filled with lacunae, especially with regard to the first, “Polish”, part of his life. The outstanding questions concern e.g.: the date and place of his birth, his alleged noble origin, his early education in Rzeczpospolita, his religious stance and the circumstances under which he left Lviv and entered the Topkapı Palace’s inner service.

My presentation aims to shed a new light on those concerns. I will present a new version of Bobovius’ biography updated by myself based on data collected in 2019-2022 from archives in Poland and Ukraine. The lecture can be regarded as an introduction to my recently published book bearing a similar title in Polish: Bobovius – Ali Ufkī: Życie Wojciecha Bobowskiego między faktami a legendą. Kraków: Jagiellonian University Press, 2023.
